Have the Right Vacuum?

What's Next?

When vacuuming rugs and carpet, use slow, repetitive, front-to-back motions in an overlapping sequence. A quick, single pass will have little effect on removing the dust and loose dirt. Perform approximately four passes over an area and then move to the left or right as you move around the room. There is no need to push down the front of the vacuum or stay in the same spot for more than four passes. If the carpets or rugs are really soiled you can do four passes in one direction and then turn the vacuum perpendicular to the four passes you just performed and do four new passes over the same area.

Don’t ignore the corners and crevices where dust can build up.

When vacuuming a room, start from the top down beginning with the lights, then the top of window treatments and drapes, furniture and lastly the carpet.

On board tools & where to use them:

  • All purpose brush – works on bookshelves, around windows, radiators and baseboard heating.
  • Crevice tool – long and thin – reaches into narrow slots and corners.
  • Soft brush – window treatments, mini-blinds, wood blinds, draperies, etc.
  • Upholstery Brush – used on chairs, sofas, cushions, mattresses and fabric furniture covers.

Vacuuming Frequency:

  • Vacuum at least once a week.
  • Vacuum daily in high-traffic areas like the main entrance, kitchen and family rooms.
  • Vacuum twice a week in medium traffic areas.
  • Vacuum weekly in light traffic areas.

Vacuum-care tips:

  • Keep your vacuum in tip-top condition which means periodic trips to the repair shop for a check up.
  • Keep the owner's manual and refer to it when you need it.
  • Keep hoses and attachments free from obstructions. The owner’s manual should tell you where these bottlenecks are likely to occur.
  • Keep the brushes clean and remove hair and string that can damage the vacuum and greatly reduce the machine’s effectiveness.
  • Inspect the vacuum for any rough edges, loose screws, etc. that could damage walls and your rugs and carpet.
  • MUST DO: Remove, discard and replace the HEPA filter vacuum bag when they are one-half to two-thirds full.
